Bruckenthalia spiculifolia

An interesting dwarf shrub, characteristic for the high mountains of the Balkan Peninsula and Romania, where it forms heaths, similarly to Caluna vulgaris and the various species of Erica in other parts of Europe.  This spectacular plant grows in Stara Planina (Western, Central and Eastern), Sredna gora, Znepole Region, West Frontier Mountains, Sofia Region, Vitosha, Rila, Pirin, Belasitsa, Slavianka and the Rhodopes (Central and Western). The flowering period is extended from June to September and depends on the altitude. More information about its communities may be found in the Red Data Book of Republic of Bulgaria.
