Fagus orientalis

The Oriental beech is a rare tree, in Europe it is a relict from the Tertiary period. It’s range extends from Eastern Stara Planina, Strandzha Mt (in Bulgaria and Turkey) to Caucasus and Iran. It is similar to the common European beech, but is has larger leaves and acorns with broad appendages. The Oriental beech forms communities, which are considered to be Endangered and therefore included in the Red Data Book of the Republic of Bulgaria.
