Lilium jankae

Lilium jankae

This lily is named after the Hungarian botanist Viktor Janka von Bulcs, who has great contribution to the study of the Balkan flora. Janka’s lily is found in the high mountains of the Balkan Peninsula and Romania, quite isolated. It belongs to the group of Lilium carniolicum, which has two more closely related species in the country – L. albanicum and L. rhodopaeum. In Bulgaria Lilum jankae may be seen in Western and Central Stara Planina, Vitosha and Rila mountains, always above 1500 m. The flowering period is in July and August. The plat is strictly protected by the Bulgarian law.
