Primula deorum

Primula deorum

Undoubtedly, this is the most beautiful Bulgarian primrose. It was described by the Czech botanist Prof. Josef Velenovsky, who was the first to systematically explore the flora of Bulgaria. The Rila primrose is Bulgarian endemic, which is found only in Rila mountain. It was not so far ago found also in Vitosha mountain, but it seems that it is not native there, but escaped from alpine gardens, where it was planted in the past. The flowering period is from June to August. The primrose is a high-mountain flower, seen above 1900 m, where it grows in peat bogs and wet places along streams and lakes. Primula deorum is protected by the national Biodiversity Act and is included in the Red Data Book of the Republic of Bulgaria.
