Scilla bithynica

Scilla bithynica

Popularly known as Bithynian or Turkish squill, this plant is actually distributed in the Balkan Peninsula (Bulgaria, Turkey) and Asia Minor. In Bulgaria it is found in limited localities on the Northern and the Southern Black Sea coast, as well as quite locally in Northeastern Bulgaria and Eastern Stara Planina Mts (both localities unconfirmed). It is apparently a relict, preferably inhabiting seasonally flooded forest, where it gives blue aspect in the early spring. The flowering is in April and May. In Bulgaria this plant is Endangered and is included in the Red Data Book of the Republic of Bulgaria.
