Verbascum tzar-borisii

Verbascum tzar-borisii

This beautiful mullein is a Bulgarian endemic, though rather local. It may be seen only in isolated localities in Northeastern Bulgaria, where it grows in open grasslands on poor eroded soils. The flowering is in May and June. The plant is thought to be Critically endangered and is therefore included in the Red Data Book of Bulgaria and is strictly protected by the Biodiversity Act. The plant was named after Tzar Boris III of Bulgaria, a passionate botanist, as acknowledgement of his contribution to botany.
