Viola grisebachiana

Beautiful, large-flowered pansy, possibly one of the most notable representatives of the genus is this country. It is a Balkan endemic, found in Albania, Bulgaria, Greece, Macedonia and Serbia. In Bulgaria it occurs only in Northern Pirin and Central Rodopi mountains, very locally. The plant is confined to rocks and rocky places, always on marble or limestone. The flowering occurs from June to August. Strictly protected species, included in the Red Data Book of the Republic of Bulgaria. The species is named after August von Grisebach, prominent explorer of the flora of the Balkan Peninsula and author of the historical book “Spicilegium Florae Rumelicae and Bithynicae”.
